Aadhaar card is a unique 12-digit identification number that is assigned to you (and anyone who applies). The number is linked to your demographic (name, date of birth, age, address, mobile number, email ID, etc) and biometric data (iris scan, fingerprint scan, and photograph). All the data is held in a centralized database. The entire Aadhaar program is managed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) which was set up in 2009.

How to update photos on the Aadhaar card?

Biometric updates such as photographs and fingerprints cannot be changed online. You will need to visit the Aadhaar Permanent Enrolment Centre to make the changes. The procedure to change the Aadhaar Card photo offline is mentioned below:

Step 1: Visit the nearest Aadhaar Permanent Enrolment Centre. You can find the nearest center by Locating an Enrollment center.

Step 2: Collect the Aadhaar enrolment form. You can also download the form by visiting the official website of UIDAI.

Step 3: Fill in the relevant details on the form.

Step 4: Provide the form and give the biometric details.

Step 5: A photograph of you will be taken by the executive.

Step 6: The biometric details will need to be provided for approval.

Step 7: A fee of Rs.100 will need to be paid to update the Biometrics details on the Aadhaar.

Step 8: An acknowledgment slip will be provided to you with an Update Request Number (URN) mentioned on it. You can check the status of your request by using the URN.

No documents will need to be provided to update the photograph on the Aadhaar Card. It may take up to 90 days for the request to be processed.

Steps to Download the Updated Aadhaar Card

Once your request to change the photo in Aadhar is processed, you can download the updated Aadhaar card online. Follow the steps mentioned below to download the updated Aadhaar Card:

Step 1: Visit the official website page of Aadhar at https://uidai.gov.in/

Step 2:  Go to the ‘My Aadhaar’ section

Step 3: Click on the ‘Download Aadhaar’ option or you can also directly visit this link https://eaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/

Step 4: Click on ‘Download Aadhaar

Step 5: On the next page, enter your Aadhaar Number, Enrolment ID, or Virtual ID

Step 6: Enter the captcha and click on ‘Send OTP’

Step 7: Enter the OTP received on your registered mobile number and tick the check box if you want a Masked Aadhaar card

Step 8: Now, click on ‘Verify & Download’ to download a PDF of your e-Aadhaar card.

Important Points Related to Aadhaar Card Update
  • No document is required for changing the photo on the Aadhaar card
  • You do not have to submit a photograph as the executive clicks the photograph on the spot using the webcam
  • It may take up to 90 days to get the details updated in Aadhaar
  • You can check the Aadhaar update status online using the URN provided in the Acknowledgement Slip
  • There is no online process to change photos in the Aadhar card through the Self-Service Update Portal (SSUP).
